The quality of local products continues to improve with standards implementation

The public perception that foreign products are of better quality than local products is quickly fading as rapid and significant changes are taking place in our industries.  Included in these changes is the growing use of product and system standards in our local industries.

Many Guyanese are opting for and consuming locally manufactured goods as the quality of these goods is becoming comparable with those manufactured abroad. Generally, there is an improvement in the packaging, preservation, and durability of locally manufactured products and therefore products are satisfying the purpose for which they were purchased

The enhanced quality of goods is a direct result from the dramatic change in the quality-consciousness, responsibility and approach of our manufacturers, and definitive moves by Regulatory Bodies to offer technical assistance and promote standardization especially in micro and small enterprises sector in the country.

Local Manufacturers are putting quality systems into their operations, and reorganizing such operations so that consistently, locally manufactured products are produced that can compete with any such products in any market.  Standards and quality are becoming the key, operative words of many of our local companies.

Further, the various Regulatory Bodies covering the different sectors of the economy have played a significant role in the improvement in quality of goods produced, manufactured and processed.

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards has been very active in promoting standards and quality management systems in the various sectors of the economy, including training, sensitization, and ground – level work with so many companies in the country.  In addition, the Bureau has been developing standards to meet the needs of local manufacturers.

In essence, the quality of locally-manufactured goods has tremendously improved, complying with national and international standards.  Undoubtedly, public confidence in the quality of local goods produced will continue to grow, whether products are processed foods, seafood, furniture and other forest products, poultry products, craft items, or building and construction materials.

All Guyanese should continue to support our industries by buying local products that are available on our market.  Accordingly, we must encourage and inspire our children, relatives, visitors and tourists to support and buy our local products.
