GNBS CONDUCTS FOOD SAFETY SYMPOSIUM FOR STAKEHOLDERS IN BERBICE

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) recently conducted a foods safety symposium in New Amsterdam Berbice for persons who are in the business providing food to consumers.  The symposium, which was held in the Regional Democratic Council Boardroom, on May 24, 2017 was attended by more than 40 individuals, including caterers, food manufacturers and proprietors of fast food outlets in Regions 5 and 6.

At the symposium, a presentation was made by Ms. Tashi Browne, Technical Officer II of the GNBS on the preparation and presentation of foods to ensure that they are not contaminated or spoiled, but offered fresh and wholesome to consumers. Ms. Browne also enlightened participants on the consequences of serving bad food to their customers, which include sicknesses and loss of customers and loss of business reputation.

Meanwhile, Ms. Andrea Mendonca, Technical Officer II of the Standardisation Department presented on the workings of the National Codex Committee, the various international food standards developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, and how stakeholders can access these standards.

The final presentation was done by Ms. Audrey Gomes, Training and Development Officer of the Small Business Bureau (SBB) who provided participants with information on how they can access grants, loans and training from the SBB to improve their businesses.

Participants utilized every opportunity to raise concerns and garner information in relation to food safety and the other topic presented and expressed their gratitude for the initiative taken by the GNBS to conduct such an important symposium in Berbice.

This food safety symposium was the third of such sessions held across the country by the GNBS since the commencement of the year. The first session was held in Georgetown and the second was held in Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast.
