The Inaugural Caribbean Road Show coming to Guyana!

The GNBS and ASTM International; Promoting Standards and Codes for Sustainable Construction!

For the first time in the Caribbean, ASTM International, a Global Standards Body will launch the “Caribbean Roadshow” in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana from June 04-08, 2018.

ASTM is an acronym for American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM International develops and publishes voluntary technical standards for various technical subject areas of important interest to Guyana; such as building and construction materials, utilities, oil and gas, solar and wind power renewal energy and energy efficiency, personal protective equipment, fuel and lubricants among others.

ASTM International also has accredited asphalt and concrete testing laboratories that Guyana can access, as well as proficiency testing and certification programmes. Their productivity tools such as COMPASS and training and study tour programmes are also available to us; in the main free.

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ASTM International on October 18, 2011 and ever since, the ASTM International – GNBS relationship is thus strong and growing.Through this MOU, the GNBS has built a partnership with ASTM International where there is the utilisation, promotion, and participation in international standards development and membership of academic institution at a reduced cost or for free.

This MOU signifies the commitment of ASTM International, a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international standards, to partner with developing countries to reduce technical barriers to trade thus facilitating access to international markets. ASTM provides free access to 12000 international standards in the areas of metals, paints, plastics, textiles, petroleum, construction, energy, consumer products, medical devices and services and electronics and that are available free.

ASTM standards are widely used in Guyana in the areas of construction and manufacturing, at our technical and vocational institutions including the University of Guyana.

Caribbean Roadshow

While in Guyana on June 07 and 08, 2018, there will be opportunities for interactions with the key stakeholders who will benefit from guest presentations from ASTM, CROSQ, GNBS and the private sector. Selected local businesses will be provided with the opportunity to promote their products manufactured using ASTM International standards and also share their experiences with the ASTM International representatives.

ASTM International is bringing two key experts to the region and who will be very value added for us in Guyana:

  • Chris Mathis – ASTM Board member and a 35+ year plus buildings performance consultant – he is also a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), focusing on the energy performance of buildings and their sustainability; he currently chairs the ASHRAE Residential Buildings Committee. He has also served four terms on the International Code Council (ICC) energy code development committee. Chris will be an important ally in helping us to implement the recently approved (April 2018) Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code which foundation is the ICC International Energy Conservation Code and the ASHREAE standard aforesaid.

–          Mark Johnson – ICC Vice President and who is collaterally coming to speak to the GNBS about the current revision of all our Building Codes. The mere presence of ICC will facilitate targeted discussions with the construction practitioners and technical officers of the GNBS on the development and enforcement of Building codes. This will also provide us with the opportunity to further engage ICC and ASTM International in other areas of collaboration such as the oil and gas sector where they have access to international experts and also our participation in the technical attachment programmes provided to strengthen the capacity of developing countries etc.

Topics will cover important themes such as energy efficiency, consumer products, performance of materials and buildings, and sustainability oil, gas and fuels standards etc.  In addition, the forum will provide a good network of communication and collaboration for all organizations that have an interest in sustainable construction practices. The goal of the Roadshow is to enhance the CARICOM region’s efforts in areas such as energy efficiency, water conservation, materials management, building safety and overall economic growth.
