GNBS offers Technical Assistance to Sister Bureau

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) provided technical assistance in the form of training to three staff members of the recently established Bahamas Bureau of Standards (BBS).

The training, which concluded on September 25, 2015 focused on Metrology (weights and measures), and was necessary as the BBS seeks to build capacity to begin offering such services to the citizenry of the Bahamas.

During the week long training, Stephen Isaacs, a Metrologist and Tino Lightbourne and Dahl Bethell, both Metrology Inspectors were trained by Alwin Etwah and Keemo Fyffe, Senior Inspectors in the field of Metrology for over fifteen years, to verify weighing and measuring devices such as scales, masses, bulk meters, petrol pumps and weighbridges. The training involved theory and practical applications which were conducted at the GNBS and in some aspects, facilitated by some local companies.
One Inspector and two Inspector Assistants who were recently employed by the GNBS also benefited from the training.
Speaking at the simple ceremony on the final day of the training, Mr. Jermaine Softley, Chief Inspector of the GNBS congratulated the trainees for the high level of receptiveness they demonstrated during the training and encouraged them to continue to practice what they have learnt. He advised that in the discipline of Metrology, without practice, what was taught could easily be forgotten.
The Bahamas Bureau of Standards was only established in 2013 and currently has twelve staff members. Unlike many of the other Bureaus in the Region, the BBS is now building capacity to provide vital metrology and other services in the field of Standardisation to the citizens of that Caribbean Island.
