The Guyana National Bureau of Standards in the capacity as the Codex Contact Point participated in the capacity building workshop / technical meeting for Codex Focal Points in the Caribbean in Ottawa, Canada on June 13-14, 2017. The workshop aimed at strengthening regional capacity to enhance participation in Codex Alimentarius Commission activities; including the management of Codex Contact Point offices, management of national and technical committees, and enhancing participation in international scientific advisory bodies utilizing regional strengths.
The workshop encouraged participants to share good practices for improving coordination with different parties involved in Codex Alimentarius; that is, political, private and public sector, academia and consumer bodies. Thirteen CARICOM countries participated in this workshop including; Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Bahamas, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Jamaica, Suriname, Haiti, and Guyana. Officers of Health Canada, United States Codex of the United States Department of Agriculture, Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture also attended the workshop.

INTERREGIONAL CODEX ALIMENTARIUS COLLOQUIUM FOR AFRICA, LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN, NEAR EAST AND NORTH AMERICA
The Guyana National Bureau of Standards in the capacity as the Codex Contact Point participated in the interregional Codex Alimentarius Colloquium for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Near East and North America. The aim of the Colloquium was to analyze and identify specific issues of mutual interest or concern prior to the 40th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC40) scheduled for the week of July 17-21, 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland. This Colloquium allowed participating countries to develop common regional strategies of tackling food standards issues that will arise at the CAC40. Guyana along with twelve CARICOM countries, Latin American countries, African countries, Near East countries and North American countries participated at this Colloquium. Ms. Andrea Mendonca, Technical Officer, GNBS attended this Colloquium.
