GNBS to host Awareness Session for Key Stakeholders

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) will convene a strategic session with senior stakeholders of key Agencies in Guyana at the Guyana International Conference Centre on Monday February 20, 2012 at 10:00 h in the Lula Room.

The objectives of the session are to create awareness among senior officials about the core programmes of the GNBS and the involvement and support of these Agencies in the implementation of standards. Significant focus would also be placed on the Guyana National Quality Infrastructure (GNQI) and the strategic direction for GNBS over the next five years.

Participants will be educated on the critical elements of the GNQI, and how it would influence their operations. The GNBS will be assuming the role of the implementation of the GNQI in Guyana to facilitate trade and economic development.

Regarding the GNQI, all standardizing bodies, including the GNBS are required to review the legal and implementation frameworks for their quality infrastructure, based on the need to modernize in order to meet global trade requirements, while ensuring sustainability and the provision of acceptable service. The modernization of the regulatory bodies requires the re-engineering of processes, and the establishment of a National Quality infrastructure that is traceable to the International Quality Infrastructure.

The GNQI, although centred on the GNBS is further decentralized across several key sector Agencies and Ministries, such as the Government Analysts Food and Drug Department, the Geology and Mines Commission, the Chambers of Commerce, the Private Sector Commission and the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Natural Resource and the Environment, and Tourism, Industry and Commerce. Only with the support of these stakeholders will the true benefits and impact of Standardisation be realized in our national economy.
