GNBS visits New Amsterdam
As part of its continued efforts to promote standards and many services it offers to stakeholders countrywide, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) conducted a visit to New Amsterdam, Berbice on Tuesday April 25, 2017.
During the visit, Officers of the Marketing and Communication Department conducted a press conference to sensitize the citizens of Berbice on the various activities being conducted through the sub-office in the Region. These activities, which are geared to ensure consumer protection and equity in trade, include the verification of weighing and measuring devices in the retail sector (markets, supermarkets and shops) and at Rice mills across the Region. The Public Relations Officer of the GNBS, Mr. Lloyd David took the opportunity to encourage farmers to be vigilant when offering their paddy for sale to Rice Millers, which will ensure that are properly compensated. He assured farmers that all of the weighing devices used in the rice industry were verified by the GNBS for the current period.
During the visit, the opportunity was also taken to promote the proposed Metrology Bill to residence of Berbice. This was done through the Press Conference and a visit to the municipal market. Vendors of the market were given a preview of the contents of the Bill and encouraged to visit the Bureau’s website for further reading. This will allow them to become aware of the additions made to the proposed law and their responsibilities as stakeholders of the GNBS.
A list of useful national standards, including the salted fish standard, the standards for Jams and Jellies, Fresh fruits and vegetables and furniture were also promoted to Berbicians, and producers of these products were encouraged to acquire the standards and implement the relevant requirements.
Lastly, Officers visited the Health Fair organized by the Ministry of Public Health as part of Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (April 23-29, 2017). The GNBS, through its Laboratory Certification Programme supports the efforts of Laboratory Professionals in the implementation to the National and International standards for laboratories.

The Bureau, through its Marketing and Communication Department, intends to continue its outreach efforts to the other outlying Regions of Guyana.
