The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has certified two additional Laboratories under its Laboratory Certification Programme after they have successfully demonstrated conformance to the requirements of the Guyana Standard – General requirements for the operation of a Laboratory.
On Wednesday, January 10, 2018, both the Woodlands Hospital Pathology Laboratory and the Guyana Defense Force Medical Laboratory received their certificates, which are valid for two years. At the presentation ceremonies, Ms. Candelle Walcott Bostwick, Executive Director of the GNBS presented the certificates to Lieutenant Colonel, Godfrey Bess, Quarter Master General of the GDF and to Ms. Maricea Comacho-Chandrabose Laboratory Manager, respectively.
In addressing those gathered to witness the presentation of the certificates, Ms. Walcott Bostwick expressed satisfaction that additional Laboratories were getting onboard the Laboratory Certification Programme by conforming to the requirements of the National Standard. The Executive Director encouraged the management of both laboratories to go more towards the accreditation of their respective laboratories in the future. Certification of these laboratories will add value to the delivery of quality health care services in Guyana.
The Laboratory Manager, Ms. Bonita Richards expressed delight at the new achievement of the GDF and thanked the GNBS and the laboratory staff for their support in making it possible. Meanwhile, Dr. Gobin, Managing Director of the Woodlands Hospital commended the GNBS for its efficiency in the delivery of its services and expressed gratitude to the Pathologist, the Laboratory Manager and the rest of the team for a job well done.
Through its National Laboratory Certification Programme, the GNBS monitors the operation of laboratories involved in testing, measurement and/ or calibration activities to ensure that they are satisfying the criteria for certification and the requirements as outlined in the National Standard.
Laboratories, which conform to the requirements of this standard, are provided with formal recognition to attest that they have implemented a laboratory management system, thus providing quality and reliable results to customers who identify and select reliable testing or calibration services to meet their needs. GNBS also carries out surveillance visits during the period of certification to ensure that laboratories are maintaining the laboratory management system.
